About Jackie Jensen
A blond, muscular outfielder out of the University of California, Jackie Jensen signed with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks in 1949 and was quickly sold to the New York Yankees, debuting in 1950. Nicknamed "The Golden Boy" for his athletic gifts and matinee-idol looks, he had been a two-sport college star and remains the first person to play in the Rose Bowl, the World Series, and the MLB All-Star Game. After stops with the Yankees and the Washington Senators (his club on this 1953 high-number card), Jensen found stardom with the Boston Red Sox from 1954 on. A right fielder with a cannon arm, he was a three-time All-Star, won the 1959 Gold Glove, and led the American League in RBI three times (1955, 1958, 1959). His finest season came in 1958, when 35 home runs and a league-best 122 RBI earned him the AL Most Valuable Player Award. Jensen hit .279 with 199 home runs, 929 RBI, and 143 stolen bases across 11 seasons, retiring early in his prime largely because of a crippling fear of flying. He died in 1982 at age 55.
