About Frank Campos
A Havana-born outfielder, Francisco Jose "Cisco" Campos Lopez entered organized baseball in 1944 and earned his shot in the majors by winning the 1951 Class B Tri-State League batting title, hitting .368 with 177 hits. The left-handed hitter and thrower reached the big leagues that September and spent his entire three-season MLB career (1951-1953) with the Washington Senators, appearing in 71 games. He announced himself emphatically, doubling off Chicago White Sox pitcher Howie Judson in his very first at-bat on September 11, 1951, and batting a torrid .423 (11-for-26) across his brief September trial. He settled into a reserve and pinch-hitting role thereafter, finishing his major-league career with a .279 average, 41 hits, no home runs, and 13 RBI. Known as "Cisco" in the Cuban and Mexican Leagues, Campos was one of the wave of Cuban players Washington cultivated in the era. His 1953 Topps card (#51) is a documented double-print. He died in Miami in 2006 at age 81.
