About Tom Morgan

A California farm boy signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent before the 1949 season, right-hander Tom Stephen Morgan (born May 20, 1930, in El Monte, CA; died 1987) debuted for New York on April 20, 1951, and pitched 12 major-league seasons through 1963. He worked as both a starter and reliever for the Yankees (1951-52, 1954-56), Kansas City Athletics (1957), Detroit Tigers (1958-60), Washington Senators (1960) and Los Angeles Angels (1961-63), finishing 67-47 with a 3.61 ERA, 364 strikeouts and 64 saves in 443 games. He was a member of three Yankees World Series championship teams in the early-to-mid 1950s, and enjoyed his finest year in 1961 with the expansion Angels, going 8-2 with a 2.36 ERA. Nicknamed "Plowboy" for his farming background back home in California, Morgan later became a respected pitching coach for the Angels, Padres and Yankees. This series-2 card carries a minor printing variation: the back biography appears in white text on some copies and black on others.
