About Art Schult
Arthur William "Dutch" Schult (1928–2014), a 6-foot-4 outfielder and first baseman from Brooklyn, attended Georgetown University and signed with the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1948. His path to the majors ran through the Army during the Korean War—he later joked he couldn't fit through a tank's escape hatch—and it was his status as a returning serviceman that legally kept him on the 1953 Yankees roster, the year of this rookie card. Schult appeared in seven games that season, all as a pinch-runner without a single at-bat, and was sent to Syracuse in June; he did not play in the 1953 World Series but shrewdly invoked the GI Bill to secure a Series share. He resurfaced with the Cincinnati Redlegs (1956–57), Washington Senators (1957), and Chicago Cubs (1959–60), his best year coming in 1957 with four homers and 39 RBI. Over five big-league seasons and 164 games he batted .264 with 111 hits, 6 home runs, and 56 RBI, adding 136 home runs across a decade in the minors.
