About Ewell Blackwell
Signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1942, Ewell Blackwell was a 6-foot-6 right-handed pitcher whose whip-like sidearm delivery earned him the nickname "The Whip" and made him one of the most feared arms of the postwar era. After debuting in 1942, he starred for the Reds from 1946 to 1952, was traded to the New York Yankees (1952-53) — the team shown on this second-series card — and finished with the Kansas City Athletics in 1955. He was named to six straight All-Star Games (1946-1951). His signature 1947 season produced a 22-8 record with a 2.47 ERA while he led the National League in wins and strikeouts, including 16 consecutive victories; on June 18, 1947 he threw a no-hitter against the Boston Braves and, in his very next start, carried another no-hitter into the ninth before Eddie Stanky's single broke it up. Recurring shoulder and kidney trouble sapped his velocity, and he retired with an 82-78 record, a 3.30 ERA, and 839 strikeouts. He earned a ring as a member of the Yankees' 1952 World Series champions and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1960. Blackwell died in 1996.
