About Johnny Mize
A left-handed slugging first baseman from Demorest, Georgia, Johnny Mize reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1936 and played 15 seasons (1936–1953) for the Cardinals, New York Giants, and New York Yankees, missing three years to World War II service. A ten-time All-Star, he won the 1939 NL batting title (.349), led the NL in home runs four times (1939, 1940, 1947–48) and in RBI three times (1940, 1942, 1947). He retired a .312 career hitter with 2,011 hits, 359 home runs, and 1,337 RBI. Nicknamed "The Big Cat" for his poised, graceful movements at the plate and around first base, Mize closed his career as a Yankees pinch-hitting force, winning five straight World Series titles (1949–1953); in the 1952 Series against Brooklyn he homered three times, one as a pinch-hitter. His 1953 Topps card (#77, a Series 1 double-print) shows him in his final playing season. The Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1981.
