About Pee Wee Reese

Harold "Pee Wee" Reese, a slick-fielding shortstop out of Louisville, signed with the minor-league Louisville Colonels and reached Brooklyn in 1940, spending his entire 16-season career (1940-42, 1946-58) with the Dodgers before finishing in Los Angeles. A 10-time All-Star, he was the on-field captain and steadying leader of the "Boys of Summer" dynasty that won seven NL pennants and the franchise's first World Series title in 1955. He batted .269 with 2,170 hits, 126 home runs, 885 RBI, and 232 stolen bases, leading the National League with 30 steals in 1952 after losing 1943-45 to U.S. Navy service in the Pacific. His nickname came not from his size but from his boyhood skill as a marbles champion (a "pee wee" is a small marble). He is remembered for publicly supporting Jackie Robinson during baseball's integration. Reese was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1984.
