1953 Topps #75 Mike Garcia

About Mike Garcia
Signed by Cleveland scout Willis Butler out of semipro ball in Tulare, California, Mike Garcia debuted with the Indians in 1948 and pitched 14 major-league seasons (1948-1961), spending his first dozen in Cleveland before finishing with the White Sox and Senators. A durable right-hander, he anchored Cleveland's celebrated "Big Four" rotation alongside Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Early Wynn. Garcia led the American League in ERA twice, as a rookie in 1949 (2.36) and again in 1954 (2.64), and earned three straight All-Star selections from 1952 to 1954. His finest year came in 1954, when he went 19-8 for an Indians club that won a then-record 111 games before losing the World Series to the Giants. Teammate Joe Gordon nicknamed him "The Big Bear" for his hulking frame and lumbering gait; the press also called him "Mexican Mike." He finished 142-97 with a 3.27 ERA and 1,117 strikeouts.
