About Ray Boone
Raymond Otis "Ike" Boone, a San Diego native and a distant descendant of frontiersman Daniel Boone, signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1942 and, after Navy service in World War II, was converted from catcher to shortstop in the minors. He reached the majors in 1948, sharing in Cleveland's World Series title that fall, and in 1949 took over shortstop from player-manager Lou Boudreau. Traded to Detroit in 1953, he shifted to third base and had his best years there: a two-time All-Star (1954 and 1956), he tied Jackie Jensen for the American League RBI crown in 1955 with 116, and in 1953 belted four grand slams to match the then-major-league single-season record. Over 13 seasons (1948-1960) with Cleveland, Detroit, the White Sox, Athletics, Braves and Red Sox, he batted .275 with 1,260 hits, 151 home runs and 737 RBI. Boone became the patriarch of baseball's first three-generation family, father of catcher Bob Boone and grandfather of All-Stars Bret and Aaron Boone. He later scouted for the Red Sox for decades and died in 2004.
