About Ferris Fain

A left-handed-hitting first baseman, Ferris Fain (1921-2001) signed with the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals in 1939 under manager Lefty O'Doul, served in the Army Air Force during World War II (1943-45), and reached the majors with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in 1947. Over nine seasons (1947-1955) he played for the A's, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians, and became the American League's premier hitter of the early 1950s. Fain won back-to-back AL batting titles in 1951 (.344) and 1952 (.327) and was named an All-Star five straight years (1950-1954). A superb glove man, he set a record with 194 double plays in 1949 and repeatedly led the league in assists. He finished with a .290 average, 48 home runs, 570 RBI and a .424 on-base percentage, still among the highest in history. Nicknamed "Burrhead" for his short, kinky hair, the fiery Fain saw his career cut short by chronic knee injuries.
