1953 Topps #103 Joe Astroth

About Joe Astroth
A steady defensive catcher, Joseph Henry Astroth (1922-2013) grew up in East Alton, Illinois, played three sports at the University of Illinois, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II before signing with the Philadelphia Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1945. He debuted that August as a pinch-hitter and, after several seasons in the minors (hitting .352 at AA Memphis in 1948), settled in as an Athletics backstop. Over 10 major-league seasons with the Philadelphia and later Kansas City A's, he batted .254 with 401 hits, 13 home runs and 156 RBI in 544 games. His signature moment came on September 23, 1950, when he drove in six runs in a single inning against Washington on a grand slam and a two-run single, a feat achieved by only a handful of players. Astroth served as Bobby Shantz's personal catcher during Shantz's 24-win, 1952 AL MVP campaign, and in 1953 he led American League catchers in caught-stealing percentage (72.1%) and double plays (13). His 1953 Topps card (#103, a double-print) is known for a minor printing variation in which the back biography appears in white text on some copies and black on others.

Designations, variations & errors
Double Print
Marked DP. Roughly 50% more of these cards were printed than their neighbors (the hobby calls it 'double-printed'), so they are the most plentiful cards in the set. TCDB flags 103 of them, concentrated in the low series. Five cards normally in the low run - #94, #107, #131, #145 and #156 - were also printed on the more-plentiful #166-220 sheet. A print-quantity designation, not an error or a separate card.
White-text biography
A minor printing variation: on some copies the back biography is printed in white text, on others in black text. Catalogued by TCDB (and noted by price guides for the series-2 range) but considered a minor variation, not a headline.
