About Marion Fricano
Marion John Fricano (1923-1976) was a right-handed pitcher whose 1953 Topps #199 is his rookie card. A native of Brant, New York, he briefly attended Cortland State before serving in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator during World War II. The Brooklyn Dodgers signed him in 1947, and he spent five seasons in their farm system before the Philadelphia Athletics purchased his contract in 1952 after he went 17-8 with a 2.26 ERA for Triple-A Ottawa. Fricano pitched four big-league seasons for the Philadelphia Athletics (1952-1954) and Kansas City Athletics (1955), going 15-23 with a 4.32 ERA, 2 saves, and 115 strikeouts over 88 games (43 starts). His signature moment came on September 26, 1954, when he threw the last pitch in Philadelphia Athletics history at Yankee Stadium, earning a save in an 8-6 win by inducing a double play. He is also remembered for a 1954 beaning that fractured the skull of former teammate Cass Michaels. After baseball, Fricano became a science teacher and served as North Collins Town Supervisor in New York.
