1953 Topps #64 Dave Philley

About Dave Philley
Signed by Chicago White Sox scout Hub Northern in 1940 out of East Texas State, Dave Philley reached the majors with the White Sox in 1941 and played 18 seasons (1941, 1946-62) for eight clubs, most notably Chicago, the Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland, and Baltimore. A switch-hitting outfielder who threw right-handed, he learned to bat from both sides as a boy after a fall from a tree broke his left arm. His finest season came in 1953 with the A's, the year of this card, when he hit .303 with 188 hits, 30 doubles, and a career-high 157 games. Philley batted .270 for his career with 1,700 hits, 84 home runs, and 729 RBI, and led American League outfielders in assists three times (1948, 1950, 1953). He became one of the game's great pinch hitters, setting a major-league record with nine consecutive pinch hits (1958-59) and collecting an AL-record 24 pinch hits for the 1961 Orioles. He appeared in the 1954 World Series with Cleveland. After retiring, Philley managed in the minors, guiding the Durham Bulls to a 1965 Carolina League title. He died in 2012 at age 91.
