About Ed McGhee
Warren Edward "Ed" McGhee, a right-handed-hitting outfielder from Perry, Arkansas, and an Arkansas State alumnus, prepped in the Chicago White Sox' farm system for five seasons (1948-52) before reaching the majors. He debuted on September 20, 1950, starting the season finale against the St. Louis Browns and collecting his first big-league hit, a triple off Stubby Overmire. On January 27, 1953, McGhee was traded to the Philadelphia Athletics in a five-player deal that sent batting champion Ferris Fain to Chicago; this 1953 Topps card (#195) is his rookie card. He played for the Athletics in 1953-54 before returning to the White Sox, appearing in his final major-league game on May 26, 1955. Over four big-league seasons (1950, 1953-55), the 5-foot-11 McGhee batted .246 with 124 hits, 3 home runs, and 43 RBI in 196 games. He died in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1986.
