About Carl Scheib
Signed by Connie Mack out of tiny Gratz, Pennsylvania, right-hander Carl Scheib debuted for the Philadelphia Athletics on September 6, 1943, at age 16 — the youngest player in American League history — and later that month became the youngest pitcher ever to record a strikeout (age 16 years, 268 days). After Army service in 1945, he returned to spend his entire big-league career with the A's (1943-45, 1947-54) before a brief 1954 finish with the St. Louis Cardinals, going 45-65 with a 4.88 ERA, 290 strikeouts and 17 saves over 267 games and 11 seasons. His best year was 1948, when he went 14-8, and he mounted an 11-7 comeback in 1952. Nicknamed the "Wonder Boy" for his teenage arrival, Scheib was also one of the era's finest hitting pitchers: he batted .298 in 1948 and .396 (21-for-53) in 1951 — the highest for a pitcher with that many at-bats since 1925 — finishing at .250 with 5 home runs and 59 RBI. Arm and shoulder trouble from heavy relief use ended his career in 1954; he died in 2018 at age 91.
