About George Metkovich
George "Catfish" Metkovich was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman signed as a teenager and developed through the minors before reaching the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1943. Over ten big-league seasons he played for the Red Sox (1943-46), Cleveland Indians (1947), Chicago White Sox (1949), Pittsburgh Pirates (1951-53), Chicago Cubs (1953) and Milwaukee Braves (1954), batting .261 with 934 hits, 47 home runs and 373 RBI across 1,055 games. His signature moment came in the 1946 World Series with Boston, where, in a limited role, he doubled as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of Game 7 to put the tying runs in scoring position, though the Cardinals won 4-3 on Enos Slaughter's "Mad Dash." His nickname was born in spring training around 1940 when a catfish's sharp fin pierced his foot on a fishing trip, prompting Casey Stengel's quip that it "must have been filet of sole." A three-time PCL standout who was voted 1950 Pacific Coast League MVP, Metkovich was pictured here on his 1953 Topps card during his Pirates run; he was inducted into the PCL Hall of Fame posthumously in 2013.
