About Tony Bartirome
Anthony Joseph Bartirome (May 9, 1932 – June 22, 2018), a left-handed first baseman signed out of the Pittsburgh sandlots, needed just one minor-league season before winning the Pittsburgh Pirates' starting job at first base as a 19-year-old in 1952. That would be his only big-league season: he hit .220 with 78 hits and 16 RBI in 124 games, then was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and, though he played in the minors through the early 1960s, never returned to the majors. In the minors he won the 1956 Eastern League batting title (.305) with the Williamsport Grays and was named the team's MVP. Bartirome's lasting legacy came off the field: he served as the Pirates' head athletic trainer from 1967 to 1985, tending the World Championship clubs of 1971 and 1979, and later coached for the Atlanta Braves (1986–1988). His obituary noted he is believed to be the only man ever to serve as player, trainer, and coach at the major-league level.
