About Ed Yuhas

John Edward "Eddie" Yuhas was a right-handed pitcher born August 5, 1924, in Youngstown, Ohio (d. July 6, 1986, in Winston-Salem, NC). Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1942 and traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1943, he lost time to World War II service before spending five seasons in the minors and reaching the majors with the Cardinals in 1952 at age 27. Working out of the bullpen, Yuhas turned in one of the great one-year debuts of the era, going 12-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 54 appearances, the best won-lost percentage (.857) in the National League. That performance drew him votes in the 1952 NL Most Valuable Player balloting, where he finished in a five-way tie for 31st. His story took a cruel turn in 1953: after just two games and one inning he suffered an arm injury on April 28 and never pitched in the majors again. Yuhas retired with a 12-2 career record, a 2.87 ERA, and 39 strikeouts over 56 games, all packed into essentially a single sensational season. He is not in the Hall of Fame. This 1953 Topps card (#70) carries a black nameplate banner denoting his National League club and no known variation or error.
