About Peanuts Lowrey
Harry Lee "Peanuts" Lowrey earned his nickname as a boy when an uncle, noting his small size, said he was "no bigger than a peanut"; he even appeared as an extra in the Our Gang comedies filmed near his California home. Signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1937 as a shortstop, he reached the majors on April 14, 1942 and spent 13 seasons (1942-55) as a versatile outfielder and utility man with the Cubs (1942-43, 1945-49), Cincinnati Reds (1949-50), St. Louis Cardinals (1950-54) and Philadelphia Phillies (1955). A 1946 National League All-Star, Lowrey started all seven games in left field for the pennant-winning 1945 Cubs in the World Series, batting .310 (9-for-29) with four runs as Chicago fell to Detroit in seven. In 1952 with the Cardinals he strung together seven straight pinch-hits, breaking a record held by Ty Cobb (later surpassed by Dave Philley and Rusty Staub). He finished a career .273 hitter with 1,177 hits, 37 home runs and 479 RBI, then coached in the majors for roughly 17 seasons after retiring. He died in 1986.
