1953 Topps #172 Rip Repulski

About Rip Repulski
Signed out of Minnesota by the St. Louis Cardinals organization (scout Walter Shannon) in 1947, Eldon John "Rip" Repulski climbed through the farm system before reaching the majors in 1953. The right-handed outfielder debuted as the Cardinals' regular center fielder that year, making this his rookie card. Over nine seasons (1953-1961) with the Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox, he batted .269 with 830 hits, 106 home runs and 416 RBI in 928 games. His best years came early: career highs of a .283 average, 99 runs and 39 doubles in 1954 (when he strung together ten straight two-hit games in June), and 23 home runs in 1955. Repulski earned his lone All-Star selection in 1956. Though best remembered as a Cardinal, he won his only World Series ring as a reserve with the 1959 champion Dodgers, who beat the White Sox.
