About Stu Miller
A right-handed pitcher who won on guile rather than heat, Stuart "Stu" Miller was signed off a St. Louis Cardinals tryout camp in his hometown of Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1949 for a $100 bonus. He debuted with the Cardinals in August 1952 — shutting out the Cubs in his first start — and this Series 3 card captures him in his early St. Louis years. Over a 16-season career (1952-1968) he pitched for the Cardinals, Phillies, New York/San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and Atlanta Braves, finishing 105-103 with a 3.24 ERA, 1,164 strikeouts, and 154 saves in 704 games. Working mostly out of the bullpen, he led the National League in ERA in 1958 (2.47) and was named The Sporting News Fireman of the Year in both 1961 and 1963 — the first to win the relief award in each league. A member of the 1966 world-champion Orioles, he was nicknamed "The Butterfly Man" for a slow, fluttering, deception-based repertoire thrown behind a fastball that topped out near 80 mph. He is best remembered for the 1961 All-Star Game at windy Candlestick Park, where a gust staggered him into a balk — folklore says he was "blown off the mound," a tale he cheerfully denied ("I just waved a little"). Enshrined on the Giants Wall of Fame and in the Orioles Hall of Fame, Miller died in 2015.
