About Bobby Hofman
Robert George "Bobby" Hofman (1925–1994) was a St. Louis-born, right-handed-hitting utilityman who spent his entire seven-season major-league career with the New York Giants (1949, then 1952–57). Signed out of St. Louis after Army service in World War II, he climbed through the Giants' farm system and stuck in New York in 1952. A versatile Leo Durocher and Bill Rigney bench piece, Hofman played second base, first base, third base, and catcher while serving as a dangerous right-handed pinch-hitter. Over 341 games he batted .248 with 32 home runs and 101 RBIs, twice reaching double-digit homers (1953 and 1955), and he was a member of the Giants' 1954 World Series championship club. He also tied the then-record for career pinch-hit home runs with nine. Notably, Hofman was a boyhood American Legion teammate of Yogi Berra in St. Louis. After retiring, he became a longtime American League coach and later a New York Yankees scouting and player-development executive.
