About Davey Williams
A Dallas native, David Carlous Williams signed with the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association after starring in the 1945 Esquire Boys' All-American game, and the New York Giants bought his contract for a reported $50,000 and two players. A right-handed second baseman, he debuted in 1949 and spent six seasons (1949, 1951-1955) entirely with the Giants, becoming their regular keystone man from 1952. His finest year came in 1953, when he hit .297 and earned selection to the National League All-Star team. Williams anchored the infield of the 1954 world-champion Giants, playing all four games as New York swept the Cleveland Indians. His career was cut short on April 23, 1955, when Jackie Robinson, retaliating for Sal Maglie's brushbacks, bunted and barreled into Williams covering first; the collision aggravated a chronic back condition, and persistent pain forced his retirement at just 27. He finished a .252 hitter with 450 hits, 32 home runs, and 163 RBI over 517 games. Sometimes called "Dallas Davey" for his hometown, he coached for the Giants (1956-1957) and briefly managed the Dallas Rangers before returning to Texas, where he died in 2009.
