About Jim Hearn
A 6-foot-3 Georgia Tech basketball center, James Tolbert Hearn (1921-1998) was signed by the Cardinals after scout Jack Ryan spotted him at the 1941 National Baseball Congress tournament; converted from third base to pitcher in the minors, he lost 3½ years to Army service in World War II before debuting for St. Louis in 1947. Claimed on waivers by the New York Giants in July 1950, the right-hander responded brilliantly, going 11-3 the rest of the way and leading the National League with a 2.49 ERA, a turnaround that earned him the nickname "Miracle Man" from sportswriter Dan Daniel. He won 17 games in 1951, beat Brooklyn 3-1 in Game 1 of the famous pennant playoff, and threw a four-hit, 6-2 complete game over the Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series. Hearn pitched 13 major-league seasons for the Cardinals, Giants and Phillies, finishing 109-89 with a 3.81 ERA and 669 strikeouts. He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
