About Eddie Miksis
Signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1944 at age 17 — Brooklyn purchased a controlling interest in his minor-league club to land him — Eddie Miksis debuted that June and became one of the era's most versatile utility men, playing shortstop, second, and third base plus the outfield while batting and throwing right-handed. Over 14 major-league seasons he suited up for the Dodgers (1944, 1946–1951), Chicago Cubs (1951–1956), St. Louis Cardinals (1957), Baltimore Orioles (1957–1958), and Cincinnati Redlegs (1958), retiring with a .236 average, 44 home runs, and 228 RBI across 1,042 games. Miksis reached the 1947 and 1949 World Series with Brooklyn (.273 in eight Series games) and etched his name into Dodgers lore in Game 4 of the 1947 Series: pinch-running on first base, he raced home with the winning run on Cookie Lavagetto's ninth-inning double, the hit that broke up Bill Bevens' no-hit bid at Ebbets Field. Later, as a Cub, he lent his glove to a young Ernie Banks during Banks' first spring training in 1954. Born September 11, 1926, in Burlington, New Jersey, Miksis died in 2005 at age 78.
