About Bob Addis
Robert Gordon "Bob" Addis (1925–2016) was a left-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing outfielder who reached the majors in a modest four-season career. Signed by the New York Yankees in 1943, he interrupted his climb to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II (1944–45), then spent five more minor-league seasons in the Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers systems before debuting with the Boston Braves on September 1, 1950. Addis played for the Braves (1950–51) and Chicago Cubs (1952–53) before being packaged in the blockbuster ten-player, Ralph Kiner-headlined trade to the Pittsburgh Pirates in mid-1953. Over 208 games he batted .281 with 150 hits, 2 home runs, and 47 RBI, his best year coming with the 1952 Cubs (86 hits in 93 games). His enduring claim to fame came in September 1951, when he slid home safely on a disputed call by umpire Frank Dascoli against catcher Roy Campanella; the run helped cost Brooklyn the pennant race and forced the playoff won by Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World." After baseball, Addis taught history and served as coach and athletic director at Euclid (OH) High School for 34 years. This card, a series-2 double print, exists with a minor variation in which the back biography is printed in white text on some copies and black on others.
