About Hal Jeffcoat
One of baseball's rare two-way converts, Harold "Hal" Jeffcoat (1924-2007) was a WWII paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division who made 13 combat jumps and earned a Purple Heart before turning pro. Signed by the Nashville Volunteers for $2,500 and purchased by the Cubs in January 1948, he broke in as a center fielder, hitting .279 as a rookie and earning a spot on The Sporting News rookie all-star team. After his bat cooled, the right-hander made a bold mid-career switch to pitching in 1954. Across 12 seasons (1948-1959) with the Cubs, Cincinnati Redlegs, and Cardinals, he batted .248 with 24 home runs and 188 RBI as a hitter, then went 39-37 with a 4.22 ERA and 25 saves on the mound. He is remembered for beaning Brooklyn's Don Zimmer on June 23, 1956, fracturing his cheekbone, and for a wild May 26, 1957 game in which he surrendered a Stan Musial grand slam yet hit his own go-ahead homer the same inning. This #29 card captures him in his Cubs outfield days, just before the conversion.
