About Bob Schultz
Robert Duffy "Bullet Bob" Schultz was a left-handed pitcher (he threw left, batted right) born November 27, 1923, in Louisville, Kentucky. A 6-foot-3, 200-pound WWII Army Air Forces veteran, he built a strong minor-league resume — 128-99 overall, with seasons of 20, 16 and 25 wins — before the Chicago Cubs brought him to the majors at age 27. Schultz debuted April 20, 1951, and pitched four big-league seasons for the Cubs (1951-53), Pittsburgh Pirates (1953) and Detroit Tigers (1955). His best year was 1952, when he went 6-9 in 29 games for Chicago; his ninth and final MLB win came September 14, 1952, on a complete-game shutout of Boston. His career line: 9-13, a 5.16 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 65 appearances (183 innings). On June 4, 1953, the Cubs traded Schultz to Pittsburgh in the blockbuster deal that landed seven-time NL home-run king Ralph Kiner in Chicago. On this #144 card, back biographies exist in both black and white text — a minor catalogued printing variation, not an error. Schultz died March 31, 1979, in Nashville, shot after a late-night argument in a VFW bar.
