About Gene Hermanski

Signed by the Philadelphia Athletics as a teenager in 1939, left-handed-hitting outfielder Gene Hermanski became a free agent and caught on with the Brooklyn Dodgers, debuting on August 14, 1943 and playing nine major-league seasons (1943, 1946-1953) with Brooklyn, the Chicago Cubs, and finally the Pittsburgh Pirates. A dependable corner outfielder, he batted .272 with 533 hits, 46 home runs, and 259 RBI over 739 games. Hermanski was Brooklyn's starting left fielder on April 15, 1947, the day Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier, and he became a fixture on the Dodgers' 1947 and 1949 National League pennant winners, hitting .308 (4-for-13) against the Yankees in the 1949 World Series. His signature day came on August 5, 1948, when he clubbed three home runs in a single game against the Cubs. On June 15, 1951 Brooklyn dealt him to Chicago in an eight-player trade headlined by Andy Pafko, which is why this 1953 Topps card (#179) pictures him with the Cubs. His name is sometimes spelled "Hermansky," but Topps has it correct here.
