About Virgil Stallcup
Thomas Virgil "Red" Stallcup was a tall, right-handed shortstop originally signed by the Boston Red Sox before World War II. After batting .304 in the Class B Piedmont League, he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1946 Rule 5 draft and debuted with them on April 18, 1947. From 1948 through 1951 he was Cincinnati's regular shortstop, a rangy defender who twice hit eight home runs in a season but never batted above .254, and in 1951 he shared the position with young Roy McMillan. On May 13, 1952, Stallcup was traded with Dick Sisler to the St. Louis Cardinals for Wally Westlake and Eddie Kazak, which is why this 1953 Topps card (#180) pictures him as a Cardinal. Over seven big-league seasons (1947–1953) he batted .241 with 497 hits, 22 home runs, and 214 RBI in 587 games, making his final appearance on April 25, 1953. Nicknamed "Red," Stallcup later managed briefly in the minors; he died in 1989 at age 67.
