About Al Zarilla
Signed off a winter-league tryout by Browns scout Jack Fournier, Al Zarilla hit his way up through the minors (batting .373 at Toledo in 1943) to reach the majors that same year. A left-handed-hitting right fielder, he played 10 big-league seasons (1943-1953) with the St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago White Sox, finishing at .276 with 975 hits, 61 home runs, and 456 RBI over 1,120 games. Nicknamed "Zeke" for his California roots and bowlegged, cowboy-like gait, Zarilla was the everyday right fielder on the only Browns club ever to win an American League pennant (1944), hitting .299 that year and appearing in the World Series against the crosstown Cardinals. His finest season came in 1948, when he batted .329 (fourth in the AL) and was named to his lone All-Star team, replacing Joe DiMaggio in right field. On June 8, 1950, with Boston, he tied a major-league record with four doubles in a single game. After retiring he scouted and coached, including a stint under Ted Williams with the Washington Senators.
