About Ted Lepcio
A right-handed utility infielder born in 1929 in Utica, New York, Ted Lepcio starred at Seton Hall University before signing with the Boston Red Sox in 1951 and reaching the majors on Opening Day 1952. Over a ten-season career (1952-1961) he played second base, third base and shortstop for the Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins, batting .245 with 512 hits, 69 home runs and 251 RBI across 729 games. His best year came in 1956, when he clubbed 15 home runs (nine of them in an eighteen-day stretch). Never an All-Star, Lepcio was valued for pop off the bench and steady infield glovework during Boston's youth movement of the 1950s. He is remembered in baseball lore as Jimmy Piersall's roommate in 1952 and appears in Piersall's memoir "Fear Strikes Out," having helped protect his troubled teammate. This card, #18, is a first-series double print in the 1953 Topps set.
