About Dizzy Trout

Paul Howard "Dizzy" Trout (1915-1972) was a hard-throwing, bespectacled right-hander who broke into pro ball with the Terre Haute Tots in 1935, signed with Detroit, and reached the majors in 1939. He starred for the Tigers through mid-1952 before a June trade sent him to the Boston Red Sox, the team pictured on this 1953 card, where he finished the year and retired. A two-time All-Star (1944, 1947), Trout led the American League in wins in 1943 (20) and in ERA in 1944 (2.12), the year he went 27-14 and topped the league in complete games (33), shutouts (7), and innings (352.1). He anchored Detroit's 1945 World Series champions, beating the Cubs in Game 4. A strong-hitting pitcher with 20 career home runs, he finished 170-161 with a 3.23 ERA and 1,256 strikeouts. Nicknamed for the chatty Dizzy Dean, he later broadcast Tigers games; son Steve Trout also pitched in the majors.
