1953 Topps #170 Bill Werle

About Bill Werle
A left-handed pitcher out of the University of California, Bill Werle signed with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, where he won 17 games in 1948 before the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired his rights that winter. He debuted with Pittsburgh on April 22, 1949 and won a career-high 12 games as a rookie, tossing a Fourth of July shutout against the Cincinnati Reds. Over six major-league seasons (1949-1954) he pitched for the Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Red Sox, finishing 29-39 with a 4.69 ERA and 283 strikeouts in 185 appearances. Nicknamed "Bugs" for his interest in entomology (he had studied insects), Werle was born in Oakland, California in 1920 (d. 2010). His card here shows him with the Red Sox, the club he closed his big-league career with in 1954. He later spent decades as a respected scout, evaluating pitchers for the Orioles and Indians.
