About Bill Glynn

A left-handed first baseman and World War II Army veteran, William Vincent Glynn (born July 30, 1925, in Sussex, New Jersey; died 2013) began his professional career in the minor leagues in 1946. He reached the majors briefly with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1949, then resurfaced with the Cleveland Indians from 1952 to 1954, appearing in 310 big-league games over four seasons. A light-hitting glove man, Glynn batted .249 with 170 hits, 10 home runs, and 56 RBI for his career. His signature moment came on July 5, 1954, when he stunningly hit three home runs in one game against Detroit — a third-inning grand slam off Ralph Branca, a two-run shot off Ted Gray in the fifth, and a solo blast off Dick Weik in the seventh — driving in eight runs to tie the Indians' single-game RBI record. He was the primary first baseman for much of the pennant-winning 1954 Cleveland club that won 111 games, and made his final major-league appearances in that year's World Series, doubling off the Giants' Rubén Gómez in Game 3 of New York's four-game sweep. This 1953 Topps card (#171) is Glynn's rookie card.
