About Early Wynn

Born January 6, 1920, in Hartford, Alabama (d. 1999), Early "Gus" Wynn signed with the Washington Senators at 17 after a Florida tryout and debuted in 1939, launching a 23-year career as a hard-nosed right-handed pitcher. He starred for the Senators (1939-1948), Cleveland Indians (1949-1957, again 1963), and Chicago White Sox (1958-1962), finishing 300-244 with a 3.54 ERA, 2,334 strikeouts, and 290 complete games — one of only two dozen pitchers ever to reach 300 wins. A nine-time All-Star, he anchored Cleveland's fearsome 1954 rotation alongside Bob Lemon, Bob Feller, and Mike Garcia as the Indians won 111 games and the pennant, though the club was swept in the World Series. At age 39 he won the 1959 American League Cy Young Award (22-10) and pushed the "Go-Go" White Sox to their first pennant in 40 years. Notorious for pitching inside, Wynn once said he would knock down his own mother "if she were crowding the plate." He collected his 300th victory on July 13, 1963, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972. His 1953 Topps card (#61) is noted for a minor back variation, with the biography printed in either black or white text.
