About Jim Fridley
Nicknamed "Big Jim" for his 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame, James Riley Fridley (1924-2003) was a right-handed left fielder born in Philippi, West Virginia. After serving four years in the U.S. Army during World War II, he attended West Virginia University on a football scholarship and signed with the Cleveland Indians as a free agent in 1948. Fridley reached the majors with Cleveland in 1952, and in only his eighth big-league game authored one of the great rookie feats: on April 29, 1952, he went 6-for-6 in a 21-9 rout of the Philadelphia Athletics at Shibe Park. A backup outfielder his whole career, he appeared in the majors for three teams across three seasons -- the 1952 Indians, the 1954 Baltimore Orioles (his busiest year, with career highs of 85 games and 36 RBI), and the 1958 Cincinnati Redlegs. In 152 career games he batted .248 (105-for-424) with 8 home runs and 53 RBI, spending the bulk of his professional years in the high minors. This 1953 Topps card (#187) captures him as a Cleveland Indian during a season he spent in the minor leagues.
