About Dale Mitchell

A superb contact hitter out of the University of Oklahoma — where he set still-standing school batting records — Dale Mitchell signed with the Cleveland Indians organization in 1946 and reached the majors that September. A left-handed-hitting left fielder, he spent nearly his entire 11-year career (1946-1956) with Cleveland before a 1956 finish in Brooklyn, batting .312 with 1,244 hits, 41 home runs, and 403 RBI over 1,127 games. He led the American League in hits in both 1948 and 1949, earned All-Star selection in 1949 and 1952, and was a regular on the 1948 World Series champion Indians. Famously tough to strike out — just 119 whiffs in 3,984 at-bats — Mitchell is best remembered for making the final out of Don Larsen's perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, taking a controversial called third strike he insisted was really a ball. This #26 is one of the set's double prints.

Double Print

Marked DP. Roughly 50% more of these cards were printed than their neighbors (the hobby calls it 'double-printed'), so they are the most plentiful cards in the set. TCDB flags 103 of them, concentrated in the low series. Five cards normally in the low run - #94, #107, #131, #145 and #156 - were also printed on the more-plentiful #166-220 sheet. A print-quantity designation, not an error or a separate card.
