1953 Topps #54 Bob Feller
1953 Topps #54 Bob Feller

About Bob Feller
Signed off the Van Meter, Iowa sandlots by Cleveland scout Cy Slapnicka for one dollar and an autographed ball, Bob Feller skipped the minors entirely and debuted for the Indians at age 17 in 1936. A right-handed fireballer, he spent his entire 18-season career (1936-1956) in Cleveland, going 266-162 with a 3.25 ERA and 2,581 strikeouts. An eight-time All-Star, he led the American League in wins six times and strikeouts seven times, won the 1940 pitching Triple Crown, and threw three no-hitters and a record-tying 12 one-hitters. On Opening Day 1940 he fired the only Opening Day no-hitter in major-league history. The first big star to enlist after Pearl Harbor, he lost nearly four prime seasons to Navy service aboard the USS Alabama, then returned to anchor Cleveland's 1948 World Series champions. Nicknamed "Rapid Robert," "Bullet Bob," and "The Heater from Van Meter" for his blazing fastball, he was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1962. This #54 is a double-print in the 1953 set.

Double Print
Marked DP. Roughly 50% more of these cards were printed than their neighbors (the hobby calls it 'double-printed'), so they are the most plentiful cards in the set. TCDB flags 103 of them, concentrated in the low series. Five cards normally in the low run - #94, #107, #131, #145 and #156 - were also printed on the more-plentiful #166-220 sheet. A print-quantity designation, not an error or a separate card.
