1953 Topps #53 Sherm Lollar

About Sherm Lollar
Signed by the International League's Baltimore Orioles in 1943, John Sherman "Sherm" Lollar was named IL MVP in 1945 (.364, 34 HR) before Cleveland purchased him. A right-handed catcher, he reached the majors in 1946 and played 18 seasons for the Indians (1946), Yankees (1947-48), St. Louis Browns (1949-51), and Chicago White Sox (1952-63), the club he's shown with on this 1953 Topps card. A seven-time All-Star, Lollar won the first three American League Gold Gloves for catchers (1957-59) and was regarded as one of the decade's best backstops, if often overshadowed by Yogi Berra. His finest year came in 1959, when he hit 22 home runs with 84 RBI and homered in Game Four as the "Go-Go" White Sox reached their first World Series since 1919. He had already earned a ring as a Yankee in the 1947 Series, going 3-for-4 in his two starts. Lollar batted .264 with 1,415 hits, 155 home runs, and 808 RBI, retiring with a then-record .992 fielding mark for catchers. He died of cancer in 1977 at age 53.

Double Print
Marked DP. Roughly 50% more of these cards were printed than their neighbors (the hobby calls it 'double-printed'), so they are the most plentiful cards in the set. TCDB flags 103 of them, concentrated in the low series. Five cards normally in the low run - #94, #107, #131, #145 and #156 - were also printed on the more-plentiful #166-220 sheet. A print-quantity designation, not an error or a separate card.
