About Eddie Robinson
A left-handed-hitting first baseman born December 15, 1920 in Paris, Texas, William Edward "Eddie" Robinson attended Paris Junior College and spent four minor-league seasons before Cleveland called him up at the end of 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy for World War II and did not return to the majors until 1946, then embedded himself across the American League over a 13-year career (1942, 1946-57), suiting up for the Indians, Senators, White Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, Tigers, and Orioles. A four-time All-Star who started at first base for the AL in 1949 and 1952, he hit .268 with 1,146 hits, 172 home runs, and 723 RBI over 1,315 games, all played at first base. His signature triumph came early: he was a member of Cleveland's 1948 World Series champions. After retiring, Robinson enjoyed a long front-office career, serving as general manager of the Atlanta Braves (1972-76) and Texas Rangers (1978-82). He lived to age 100, and at his death on October 4, 2021 he was the oldest living former major leaguer and the oldest living World Series champion.
