About Bob Wilson
Card #250 reads "Bob Wilson," but the White Sox catcher pictured is Robert James "Red" Wilson (1929-2014), far better known by his nickname. A Milwaukee native, Wilson was a two-sport star at the University of Wisconsin, winning MVP honors as a football center (1947-48) and Big Ten MVP as an end in 1949, while batting .342 and .426 and going 17-7 as a pitcher en route to the 1950 College World Series. Signed by the Chicago White Sox as an amateur free agent in 1950, the right-handed catcher debuted on September 22, 1951. He caught for the White Sox (1951-1954), Detroit Tigers (1954-1960), and Cleveland Indians (1960), hitting .258 with 24 home runs and 189 RBI over 602 games in 10 seasons. His finest year came in 1958, when he batted .299 in a career-high 103 games and caught Jim Bunning's no-hitter on July 20. This series-4 high number is his rookie card. Wilson later founded a Madison bank and entered the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
