About Harry Dorish
Signed by Red Sox scout Joe Reardon straight out of high school in 1941, Harry "Fritz" Dorish worked his way up through the minors — including a Junior World Series title with Louisville — before Army service in the South Pacific during World War II interrupted his career. The right-hander debuted with Boston in 1947 and pitched all or parts of ten major-league seasons through 1956, appearing for the Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. Working mostly out of the bullpen, one of the game's early modern relievers, he compiled a 45-43 record with a 3.83 ERA, 48 saves and 332 strikeouts over 323 games, and led the American League in saves in 1952 (11 saves, 8-4, 2.47 ERA) with the White Sox — the club shown on this card. Dorish also owns a quirky footnote: on June 2, 1950, against Washington, he stole home on the front end of a double steal, making him the last AL pitcher ever to steal home. After his playing days he spent decades as a scout and pitching coach, including a stint with the Red Sox (1963) and the Atlanta Braves (1968-1971). His 1953 Topps card (#145) is one of the set's double-prints.
