About Freddie Marsh
A right-handed infielder from Valley Falls, Kansas, Fred Francis "Freddie" Marsh (1924-2006) graduated from Chicago's Steinmetz High School and was originally signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1942 before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He debuted with the Cleveland Indians on April 19, 1949, and over seven big-league seasons played mostly at third base for Cleveland (1949), the St. Louis Browns (1951-52), Washington Senators (1952), Chicago White Sox (1953-54), and Baltimore Orioles (1955-56). He landed with the White Sox via a January 20, 1953 trade (for Dixie Upright and $25,000) and enjoyed his best stretch there in 1954, batting .306 in limited duty. A journeyman with no All-Star selections, Marsh finished with a .239 average, 296 hits, 10 home runs, and 96 RBI in 465 games. This high-number card lists him as "Freddie Marsh," though he is more commonly cataloged as Fred Marsh. After baseball he spent many years working as a postal carrier.
