About Orestes Minoso
Saturnino Orestes Armas "Minnie" Minoso (1923-2015) — listed on his 1953 Topps card by his given name, Orestes Minoso — reached pro ball with the Negro National League's New York Cubans (1946-48) before debuting for the Cleveland Indians on April 19, 1949 as the majors' first Black Latino player. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1951, the fleet left fielder broke the club's color barrier on May 1, 1951, homering in his first at-bat. Over roughly 17 seasons with the Indians, White Sox, Cardinals and Senators, the right-handed hitter batted .298 with 1,963 hits, 186 home runs, 1,023 RBI and 205 stolen bases. A nine-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, he led the American League in stolen bases three straight years (1951-53) and in triples three times. Nicknamed the "Cuban Comet" for his speed and beloved as "Mr. White Sox," he later staged famous cameo returns (1976 and 1980) to become a five-decade major leaguer. Chicago retired his No. 9 in 1983, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in December 2021, formally inducted in 2022.
