About Earl Harrist

Earl "Irish" Harrist was a right-handed pitcher whose 1953 Topps card (#65) pictures him with the St. Louis Browns, the club he served in 1952. Born April 20, 1919, in Dubach, Louisiana, he was far more accomplished in the minor leagues, compiling a 148-135 record across 15 seasons. He debuted in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds on August 18, 1945, and after the Chicago White Sox selected him from Cincinnati in the 1946 Rule 5 draft, he bounced between the White Sox (1947-48, 1953), Washington Senators (1948), Browns (1952) and Detroit Tigers (1953). Over five big-league seasons he went 12-28 with a 4.34 ERA, 162 strikeouts and 10 saves in 132 games, and led the American League in hit batsmen (10) in 1952. After his playing days he scouted for the Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros. Harrist died September 7, 1998, in Simsboro, Louisiana.
