About Bill Norman
Card #245 pictures Bill Norman, a St. Louis Browns coach whose 1953 Topps card marks his brief run at the big-league level. Born Henry Willis Patrick Norman in St. Louis in 1910, he had been a Browns bat boy as a boy and signed his first pro contract in 1929 after attending St. Louis University. A 6-foot-2 right-handed outfielder, he reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox, appearing in just 37 games across 1931–32 and batting .204 (0 HR, 8 RBI) in 103 at-bats before spending the rest of his playing days in the minors, where he hit .303 with 292 home runs over more than 2,000 games. Norman later coached for the Browns in 1952–53 (the role shown on this card) and is best remembered as manager of the Detroit Tigers in 1958–59, going 58–64 before being fired in favor of Jimmie Dykes early in 1959. He died of a heart attack in Milwaukee in 1962 at age 51.
