About Cliff Fannin
Clifford Bryson "Cliff" Fannin was a right-handed pitcher born May 13, 1924, in Louisa, Kentucky. He signed with the St. Louis Browns organization and reached the majors on September 2, 1945, going on to spend his entire eight-season big-league career (1945-1952) with the Browns. In 164 games (98 as a starter), Fannin compiled a 34-51 record with a 4.85 ERA, 352 strikeouts, 28 complete games, and 6 shutouts across 733 innings. His finest year came in 1948, when he went 10-14 with ten complete games and a career-high 102 strikeouts, the only season he topped 100. Pitching for a perennially second-division franchise that would relocate to become the Baltimore Orioles in 1954, Fannin was a durable arm on some lean Browns clubs rather than a headline star. He was known by the nickname "Mule." Fannin died young, at age 42, on December 11, 1966, in Sandusky, Ohio.
