1953 Topps #232 Dick Kokos
1953 Topps #232 Dick Kokos

About Dick Kokos
Born Richard Jerome Kokoszka on February 28, 1928, in Chicago, the left-handed-hitting outfielder was originally a Cleveland Indians prospect before being dealt to the St. Louis Browns in November 1947 (with $25,000 and two players for Walt Judnich and Bob Muncrief). Kokos debuted for the Browns on July 8, 1948, at age 20, and his first full season in 1949 was his best — a power year in which he ranked among the American League's top home-run hitters while also leading the league in strikeouts. He played 1948 through 1950, then lost time to Army service during the Korean War; his hitting fell off after he returned in 1953, and the franchise (relocating to become the Baltimore Orioles) released him following the 1954 season. Over a five-year, 475-game career he batted .263 with 410 hits, 59 home runs, and 223 RBI. Kokos died in Chicago on April 9, 1986, at age 58. His card is a fourth-series high number (#232), among the tougher-to-find cards in the 1953 Topps set.
