About Gordon Goldsberry
Gordon Frederick Goldsberry (1927-1996) was a left-handed first baseman out of UCLA who turned professional in 1944 and reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1949. Over four big-league seasons he played for the White Sox (1949-1951) and finished with the St. Louis Browns in 1952 - the club shown on this card - appearing in 217 games and batting .241 with 123 hits, 6 home runs, and 56 RBI. The bulk of his 13-year playing career was spent in the high-caliber Pacific Coast League, where he suited up for the Hollywood Stars, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Oaks, and Seattle Rainiers. Goldsberry's larger legacy came after his playing days: as a scout and front-office executive he signed future Hall of Famer Robin Yount for the Milwaukee Brewers, then served as the Chicago Cubs' director of player development and scouting under Dallas Green, helping rebuild a farm system that produced Greg Maddux, Rafael Palmeiro, and Mark Grace.
